Free field realization of cylindrically symmetric Einstein gravity

1998

Cylindrically reduced Einstein gravity can be regarded as an $SL(2,R)/SO(2)$ sigma model coupled to 2D dilaton gravity. By using the corresponding 2D diffeomorphism algebra of constraints and the asymptotic behaviour of the Ernst equation we show that the theory can be mapped by a canonical transformation into a set of free fields with a Minkowskian target space. We briefly discuss the quantization in terms of these free-field variables, which is considerably simpler than in the other approaches.

Fractional Tajimi–Kanai model for simulating earthquake ground motion

2014

The ground acceleration is usually modeled as a filtered Gaussian process. The most common model is a Tajimi–Kanai (TK) filter that is a viscoelastic Kelvin–Voigt unit (a spring in parallel with a dashpot) carrying a mass excited by a white noise (acceleration at the bedrock). Based upon the observation that every real material exhibits a power law trend in the creep test, in this paper it is proposed the substitution of the purely viscous element in the Kelvin Voigt element with the so called springpot that is an element having an intermediate behavior between purely elastic (spring) and purely viscous (dashpot) behavior ruled by fractional operator. With this choice two main goals are rea…

Computable majorants of the limit load in Hencky’s plasticity problems

2018

Abstract We propose a new method for analyzing the limit (safe) load of elastoplastic media governed by the Hencky plasticity law and deduce fully computable bounds of this load. The main idea of the method is based on a combination of kinematic approach and new estimates of the distance to the set of divergence free fields. We show that two sided bounds of the limit load are sharp and the computational efficiency of the method is confirmed by numerical experiments.

A note on Einstein gravity on AdS(3) and boundary conformal field theory

1998

We find a simple relation between the first subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the metric field in AdS$_3$, obeying the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions, and the stress tensor of the underlying Liouville theory on the boundary. We can also provide an more explicit relation between the bulk metric and the boundary conformal field theory when it is described in terms of a free field with a background charge.

Quantum counter-propagation in open optical cavities via the quasi-normal-mode approach

2006

By using the quasi-normal-mode (QNM) formalism in a second quantization scheme, the problem of the counter-propagation of electromagnetic fields inside optical cavities is studied. The links between QNM operators and canonical destruction and creation operators describing the external free field, as well as the field correlation functions, are found and discussed. An application of the theory is performed for open cavities whose refractive index satisfies symmetric properties.

Backlund transformations in 2-D dilaton gravity

1998

We give a B\"acklund transformation connecting a generic 2D dilaton gravity theory to a generally covariant free field theory. This transformation provides an explicit canonical transformation relating both theories.
